Differences

Where they clash most

Economy and taxes

VAT on food should be cut, even if the state collects less money.

Reformierakond Strongly against
It opposes cutting VAT on food: it estimates the state would lose up to €400 million and doubts that shop prices would fall for good.
EKRE Strongly in favour
In 2026 its parliamentary group tabled a bill to cut VAT on food from 24% to 9%; its 2023 manifesto proposed cutting it to 5%.

Economy and taxes

The annual car tax should be abolished.

Reformierakond Strongly against
It opposes scrapping the car tax: it calculates that the annual tax and the registration fee will bring in €169 million in 2027 and that abolishing them would widen the deficit.
EKRE Strongly in favour
In 2025 its parliamentary group tabled a bill to repeal the motor vehicle tax, and its 2025 municipal manifesto says the car tax must be scrapped.

Language and integration

Churches in Estonia should be required to cut their ties with the Moscow Patriarchate.

Reformierakond Strongly in favour
Its parliamentary group voted in 2025 for the amendments to the Churches and Congregations Act, which require the Estonian Christian Orthodox Church to cut its subordination to the Moscow Patriarchate.
EKRE Strongly against
In 2025 its MPs voted against the church law reform requiring ties with the Moscow Patriarchate to be cut; its leader said it violates freedom of religion.

Values and society

The Constitution should define marriage as a union between a man and a woman.

Reformierakond Strongly against
Its 2023 manifesto rejects discrimination against same-sex families; its government passed marriage equality that year, and in 2026 it pledges no step back on minority rights.
EKRE Strongly in favour
After same-sex marriage was legalised, it proposed a referendum on defining marriage in 2023; in 2017 it backed defining marriage in the Constitution as the union of a man and a woman.

Values and society

Access to abortion in Estonia should be restricted.

Reformierakond Strongly against
In 2023 it answered with the position of its minister Signe Riisalo: abortion rights are an inseparable part of women's rights, and banning abortion would endanger women's health.
EKRE Strongly in favour
Its 2023 manifesto wants to reduce abortions without medical grounds and stop funding them with taxpayers' health money; its principles say it does not support abortion.

Government and democracy

Internet voting should be kept in elections.

Reformierakond Strongly in favour
It defends online voting as part of the digital state and of citizens' freedom and criticises those who attack it; its coalition agreement aims to upgrade and secure the technology.
EKRE Strongly against
In November 2025 its council demanded that internet voting be abolished as unreliable; in 2023 its parliamentary group had already tabled a bill to end it.
