In brief

How do EKRE and Eesti 200 differ?

EKRE and Eesti 200 are far apart on most issues. EKRE fully supports defining marriage in the Constitution as a union between a man and a woman, which Eesti 200 fully opposes; Eesti 200 fully supports a climate law with binding targets, requiring churches to cut their ties with the Moscow Patriarchate and keeping internet voting, and EKRE opposes all three. Eesti 200 fully supports defence spending of at least 5% of GDP, military aid to Ukraine and using frozen Russian assets to fund it, and EKRE disagrees. On immigration and Europe, EKRE wants no increase in the immigration quota and the EU to hand powers back to member states, while Eesti 200 supports easier hiring of workers from outside the EU and dual citizenship with EU and NATO countries. They agree that all schooling should switch to Estonian by 2030.

This summary is based on the parties’ documented positions on the test statements; the source of each position is on the party’s page. Updated 17/10/2026.

Differences

Where they clash most

Language and integration

Churches in Estonia should be required to cut their ties with the Moscow Patriarchate.

EKRE Strongly against
In 2025 its MPs voted against the church law reform requiring ties with the Moscow Patriarchate to be cut; its leader said it violates freedom of religion.
Eesti 200 Strongly in favour
In 2025 its group voted for the church law reform requiring the Estonian Orthodox Church to cut its subordination to the Moscow Patriarchate, and voted for it again after the presidential veto.

Energy and environment

Estonia should pass a climate law with binding targets for cutting emissions.

EKRE Strongly against
Its 2024 European manifesto calls the EU green transition ideological extremism and rejects compulsory measures to reach carbon neutrality; in 2026 its MPs voted to reject the climate law.
Eesti 200 Strongly in favour
In 2026 its council declared that Estonia needs a climate law and its leader urged passing it now; in June its group voted against rejecting the government's climate bill.

Values and society

The Constitution should define marriage as a union between a man and a woman.

EKRE Strongly in favour
After same-sex marriage was legalised, it proposed a referendum on defining marriage in 2023; in 2017 it backed defining marriage in the Constitution as the union of a man and a woman.
Eesti 200 Strongly against
In 2023 its group voted unanimously for the law opening marriage to two adults of any sex, as its programme that year proposed; it defends an equal right to marry for everyone.

Values and society

Access to abortion in Estonia should be restricted.

EKRE Strongly in favour
Its 2023 manifesto wants to reduce abortions without medical grounds and stop funding them with taxpayers' health money; its principles say it does not support abortion.
Eesti 200 Strongly against
Estimated position: it defends everyone's right to decide about their own life and said in 2023 that restricting abortion endangers women's health; there is no later statement.

Government and democracy

Internet voting should be kept in elections.

EKRE Strongly against
In November 2025 its council demanded that internet voting be abolished as unreliable; in 2023 its parliamentary group had already tabled a bill to end it.
Eesti 200 Strongly in favour
In 2024 its group voted for the law updating internet voting, in 2025 it did not back a proposal to suspend it, and its 2023 programme wanted voting by mobile phone too.

Economy and taxes

VAT on food should be cut, even if the state collects less money.

EKRE Strongly in favour
In 2026 its parliamentary group tabled a bill to cut VAT on food from 24% to 9%; its 2023 manifesto proposed cutting it to 5%.
Eesti 200 Against
In 2025 and 2026 its MPs did not back proposals to cut VAT on food to 9 %: they voted neither for nor against, and the proposals were rejected.
