The Social Democratic Party (SDE) descends from the Estonian Social Democratic Party re-founded in 1990 and has had its current name since 2004. It belongs to the Party of European Socialists. Since 2022 it has been led by Lauri Läänemets, a former interior minister. It won 9 seats in 2023 and now has 14 MPs after five joined from other parties. It governed with the Reform Party from 2022 until March 2025, when Prime Minister Kristen Michal removed it from the coalition; it has been in opposition since. Polls in September and October 2026 put it at 14–17%.
It is a centre-left party. It proposes a progressive income tax, a lower VAT rate on basic food and higher pensions. It supports a single Estonian-language school system and marriage equality, passed in 2023, and an energy transition based on wind power with no new oil-shale plants.
